Caitlin Clark’s Fever teammate NaLyssa Smith starts fight in Chinese women’s basketball league

Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever teammate NaLyssa Smith engaged in a bench-clearing skirmish during a game in China on Thursday.

Smith, drafted by the Fever in 2022, is participating in a common practice among WNBA players who travel overseas during the offseason to fill financial gaps left by their W salaries.

Smith recently signed with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Women’s Basketball Association (WCBA) after playing the last few years in Turkey and is off to a good start in her first season in East Asia.

Zheijiang played Inner Mongolia in a preseason practice when Smith was elbowed by his defender while fighting for a rebound. In response, the Baylor producer aggressively threw the ball behind her opponent’s back.

Her reaction was not liked by the Inner Mongolia bench, who rushed out onto the field to defend her teammate. Tempers seemed to escalate before other players intervened to calm the situation.

The complicated setup ended with seven technical fouls on both sides. Tensions were high during the 40-minute contest and reached a breaking point with Smith’s altercation.

However, Smith recorded 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to help Zheijiang secure a seven-point victory.

In his third year with the Fever, Smith averaged 10.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, one assist and one block per game while starting 37 games for Indiana.

She also appeared in two games, for a total of 13 minutes, when the Fever were swept by Connecticut in the first round of the WNBA playoffs.

Smith recently deleted all affiliation with the WNBA from her social media after her girlfriend demanded a trade, citing her dissatisfaction with former coach Christie Sides’ minute allocation.

Whether or not he will return to Indy with Stephanie White in charge remains an unknown.
