A woman with severe food allergies finds herself in a bind after her in-laws refuse to prepare meals for her to eat. Now, as a result, he has to miss family gatherings.

In a post shared with redditthe woman’s husband writes that his wife is allergic to shellfish, peanuts, celery and soy.

“She’s used to people being unwilling to please her OR being lazy and thinking they can make food with one of those things and just not put it on her plate,” she writes. “So usually bring some food if people seem unsure of what to do.”

And that’s exactly what he did when the man’s mother hosted a family gathering and brought her own food because they anticipated there would be no safe food available for her.

“But when we got there, mom was offended because I had brought food. We explained why and mom said that in the future she would just prepare food that my wife could eat,” he adds.

At subsequent family gatherings, the woman did not bring her own food, but one day, after the man’s mother “was not careful with food preparation,” she was served something contaminated with shellfish.

After suffering an allergic reaction, the man’s mother “said she felt bad and apologized.”

“But then after that dinner, he decided that it was too complicated to prepare another meal for my wife and then he started preparing a meal again, but it was a meal that my wife couldn’t eat,” he adds.

The situation eventually led to the man having a conversation with the wider family, with his mother saying that “it was unfair” that she was expected to prepare several meals to please his wife.

“So I told them that it would be best if my wife and I did not accompany them to these dinners,” he writes.

His family “didn’t like this decision” and is now facing criticism.

“I told them that my wife’s health and safety comes first and since she can’t win and doesn’t risk another allergic reaction by eating there, and it wouldn’t be fair for her to sit and watch us eat, then it’s ours not to go.” The only option is ours,” he writes.

As the man added in the comments, his mother “considers it rude to bring her own food to other people’s ‘parties’ or family dinners. But she is not provided with food that she can safely eat, so the only “Another option would be not to do it.” Don’t eat.”

Reddit commenters chimed in, with one writing, “What does your mom expect your wife to do? Sit there and watch everyone else eat?”

Another added: “There are thousands, maybe millions, of dishes that do not contain shellfish or soy. If your mother wanted, she could easily adapt to your wife’s allergies.”
