OAKLAND, California. – Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County Prosecutor Pamela Price, the targets of the recalls, will soon learn whether they will keep their jobs.

As of Wednesday morning, early results showed voters favored the recall efforts with 65% of the vote. Election officials have not said exactly how long it would take to determine final results.

Thao has touted a sharp drop in homicides and a successful restart of the “Ceasefire” anti-violence program as some of the reasons the city is on the right path and why it should not be removed from office.

But critics say Thao is to blame for the closure of businesses, the departure of sports teams and the perception that crime is out of control. They say he shouldn’t have fired Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong or sold the city’s share of the Coliseum.

Critics also say the FBI raid on his home has also cast a cloud of suspicion on his administration. She has not been charged with any crime.

Price was elected on a platform to reform the criminal justice system and hold police officers accountable for their misconduct.

While in office, he has made clear that he will not automatically accuse special circumstances or more severe weapons upgrades like his predecessors. He says he has uncovered evidence that prosecutors under previous administrations intentionally excluded Jewish and black jurors from death penalty cases.

But critics say Price has gone too far by allowing criminals to receive light sentences while ignoring the wishes of crime victims. His policies have led many prosecutors to join other district attorney’s offices, including a veteran veteran whom he had charged with a crime until the case was dismissed.

“There needs to be a change,” said Sgt. Huy Nguyen, president of the Oakland Police Officers Association. “I think we’ve turned the meter so far to the left that we need to make sure that at some point there needs to be some reasonableness to ensure that we can sustain these challenges.”

Civil rights attorney Walter Riley is a strong supporter of both Thao and Price.

“There are forces, developers and real estate agents that oppose progress in Oakland,” Riley said. “They’re campaigning to unseat every progressive on the ballot. They’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars against everyone I support. And I don’t see there being a basis to unseat Sheng Thao or Pam Price.

If Price is removed, the Board of Supervisors would name her successor, who would serve until the next election.

If Thao is retired, that’s a little more complicated. The president of the municipal council would act as interim mayor. But Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas is running for Alameda County Supervisor, so someone else could take her place until there is a special election.
