16-year-old with ties to Manchester, NH, charged with murder of Springfield man

A 16-year-old boy with ties to New Hampshire is now in custody in Massachusetts, where he is accused of killing a 19-year-old man on a Springfield street last month, authorities said.

Police did not release the teen’s name because of his age. However, under Massachusetts law, minors 16 years of age or older are prosecuted as adults.

The suspect was detained by police from two states at a residence in Manchester, NH, last Friday on a warrant charging him with murder, according to Springfield police. He was extradited to Massachusetts on Wednesday, police said.

The teenager allegedly shot and killed Matthew Chaney in Springfield around 12:35 a.m. on October 19 in the 100 block of Nursery Street, police said. Chaney was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

There is currently no further information available.
