Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey defeats two rivals

Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey won comfortably his candidacy for re-election against former Mayor Kathy Meehan and Hazel Buggs, a former member of the downtown redevelopment board.

With early voting and mail-in votes counted and all 21 precincts reporting, Alfrey obtained 50.84% ​​of the votes (19,142 votes). Meehan got 25.92% (9,760 votes), while Buggs got 23.24% (8,752 votes), according to unofficial results from the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections.

Contacted for comment Tuesday night, Alfrey referenced a message he had just posted on his Facebook page.

“I want to thank our Melbourne voters for a great victory tonight! In addition to two opponents, we are facing a political action committee called the ‘Honesty and Integrity PAC’ formed to unseat us with over $50,000 for a (billionaire) “Alfrey said in his post.

“This was due to our stance on helping Daily Bread close and transition to affordable housing. This is expected to reduce homelessness in Melbourne by 50 per cent and clean up central Melbourne,” Mr Alfrey said.

“I want to thank my campaign team who worked hard and all of you who supported me along the way! Also thank you to the many small businesses in central Melbourne and Eau Gallie who also supported our campaign!” said.

“We are moving forward and not backwards!” said.

Alfrey served on Melbourne City Council from 2016 to 2020 before defeating Buggs and two other candidates in the 2020 mayoral race. He is seeking his second consecutive term.

Meehan served on the City Council from 2004 to 2012 before winning two terms as mayor from 2012 to 2020. He was unable to seek re-election due to term limits and lost to Brevard County District 3 Commissioner John Tobia. in the 2020 Republican primaries.

Buggs lost previous Melbourne mayoral campaigns in 2016 and 2020. She served for 10 years on the Melbourne Downtown Redevelopment Advisory Board and is president of the Friends of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library.

Melbourne is the main economic engine of Brevard County. The city has grown to 86,960 residents as of July 2023, census records show, and the township spans 51½ miles.

Mayors are also traditionally appointed to the Melbourne Airport Authority: more than 20,000 people work on airport properties during a typical business day at companies such as L3Harris Technologies, Northrop Grumman, Embraer Executive Jets and Collins Aerospace. Authorities report that the airport generates an annual economic impact that exceeds $3 billion.

The mayor of Melbourne earns an annual salary of $10,350 plus a monthly expenses allowance of $415.
