North Hykeham incineration plant lorries banned from driving on rural roads

A council executive meeting on Tuesday was told there are currently 116 trips each week to the incineration plant, according to the Local Democracy Information Service.

Councilor Ian Carrington said: “Heavy vehicles must follow clear route plans. They will be asked to stay on national roads and off towns and country roads, except in exceptional circumstances such as road works and flooding.

“It is essential that we minimize the harmful impact,” he added.

The council leader welcomed the proposals, while responding to media reports suggesting that burning household rubbish to generate electricity was now “the dirtiest way” the UK generated energy, following the closure of the last coal-fired power plant.

“It seems like a vague assumption that cremation is bad. “This is efficient and has minimal impact on the environment,” Hill said.

“We must do something with our waste; we could also convert it into electricity,” he added.

According to the council, the facility reduces the amount of county waste going to landfills by approximately 93% and produces enough electricity to power 27,000 homes.
