Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Public Works in the final stages of developing a high-speed weigh-in-motion system

The Minister of Transport and the Ministry of Public Works (KKR) are in the final stages of developing a high-speed weighing-in-motion (HS-WiM) system to address road accidents caused by overloaded vehicles, reported Bernama.

The installation of the system, especially at points frequented by overloaded vehicles and accident black spots, aims to ensure a modern and more integrated application, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. With HS-WIM, monitoring of heavy vehicles can be carried out in real time, automatically, without the need for the vehicle to stop for weighing, and on-site manpower requirements can be reduced.

“We know that many accidents occur on the Karak Highway and in the case of heavy commercial vehicles, we have continuously carried out integrated operations. We will constantly monitor and carry out compliance operations to reduce accidents. One of the recurring problems is overloading, with logistics trucks carrying excessive loads, and this will be continually monitored by the ministry,” Loke said.

Until the first quarter of this year, there were 652 accidents with heavy vehicles, such as container trucks, small trucks and express buses, causing 287 deaths and 95 serious injuries.

To alleviate road traffic congestion in the long term, the Transport Ministry will promote the use of railways for freight transportation, particularly from the Klang Valley to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Loke added. “Once East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) Project When it is completed, we will come up with a policy to reduce dependence on heavy trucks. “This will reduce the use of trucks on the roads,” the minister said.
