Bakersfield City Council approves new measures, community expresses concern over policies

On Wednesday night, the Bakersfield City Council unanimously approved several items on its agenda.

The meeting began by recognizing 14 Kern High School District students who attended in honor of the 48th Annual Bakersfield Teen Government Day.

In a 7-0 vote, council members approved:

  • The purchase of two prefabricated toilet facilities for Jefferson and Stiern parks
  • Pedestrian safety improvements near Norris Elementary School and Stiern Middle School
  • Bakersfield Police New Five-Year Contract with AXON Enterprise for Body Cameras
  • Park Development and Improvement Fee Adjustment
  • The 2025 Calendar for regular city council meetings, departmental budget presentations and hearings.

Moving on to public comment, several community members expressed concerns about the city’s treatment of homeless people.

“Punishing sleeping in public makes it harder to get housing and should have no place in our community,” said Ashe Huang, a member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

Huang and other speakers emphasized the need for the city to invest in tenant rights, tenant education and affordable housing.

The next meeting will be on November 6 at 5:30 p.m.
