Laredo City Council District 4 race heads to runoff

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – The race for the Laredo City Council District 4 seat will be held in a runoff. Current Rep. Alberto Torres has reached the end of his term, making this a race for a new face.

Unofficial results show Rick Garza leading with 33% of the vote, followed by Tannya Benavides with 29%. Since neither candidate received enough votes to win outright, the race will continue with a runoff on December 14.

Both candidates shared their thoughts on the close results.

Benavides expressed confidence and stated: “I feel very good about this. We were very close to being the top vote-getter, and even with the Election Day turnout, we were only 50 votes behind.”

Garza, for his part, shared his excitement for the next phase of the race. “I have an action plan for all of them. I can’t wait to come in and show what I did at LISD and show all the hard work we did there. “It takes a lot of planning, a little bit of out-of-the-box thinking, but it’s a great process when you get everyone together and we work toward a common cause.”

The second round will take place on December 14.
