Popular dishes to expect at a Chinese wedding banquet and their symbolism

A Chinese wedding has many of the characteristics of a Western marriage and also rituals, traditions and etiquette issues to follow. In our series on chinese weddingsWe break them down and tell you how to do it all right.

Attend enough Chinese wedding banquets and you’ll notice that the same types of dishes (chicken, fish, roast suckling pig, etc.) are always on the menu.

This is because the names of the dishes at the wedding banquet are homonyms of phrases with auspiciousor lucky, meanings. There are subtle differences in these names from province to province in China, with greater variations in Chinese communities in Asia.

These names are taken very seriously, so seriously that one slip-up can trigger an avalanche of complaints. In some of these cases, the newlyweds have refused to pay for the banquet.
