Mike McCarthy hopes history with Eagles’ Vic Fangio, Kellen Moore benefits Cowboys

The last time the Eagles won in Dallas Cowboys territory was in 2017, during their Super Bowl. Now, the Birds head to Dallas on a four-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are in a three game streak and will turn to veteran backup quarterback Cooper Rush after Dak Prescott suffered a hamstring injury in the team’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

“We’ve always invested all the time and energy in the quarterback.” head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters. “Now it’s Cooper’s turn, and Dak will be part of that process and we will support him and make sure we do everything we can to make sure he is prepared. … Our goal is to address this and have a game plan to beat the Eagles defense, and we have great confidence in Cooper.”

The 3-5 Cowboys are set to face the Eagles at home, where they have lost all three of their games this season, two by wide margins. Despite that, not to mention their starting quarterback. going to the insured reserve – McCarthy enters the NFC East matchup with playoff goals looming in the back of his mind.

“I think the most important thing for us is to beat Philadelphia,” McCarthy told reporters. “It’s a division game. It’s an important game. I think the way these schedules are set up, all of those things will take care of themselves if you focus on winning one game at a time. That’s what we have to do. We need to play better, number one. Keep it about ourselves. And we were always able to win our division games. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to get (to the playoffs) without winning division games.”

To defeat the Eagles, McCarthy hopes his history with the team’s new defensive coordinator, Vic Fangiocan help. McCarthy and Fangio have faced each other numerous times in their coaching careers, when McCarthy coached in Green Bay and Fangio was the Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator.

“I think the most important thing is to understand (him),” McCarthy told reporters. “I’m sure it’s a two-way street. … I think it is very, very important to understand the coordinator, to know their history, and we all remember the games they call against each other, those that went well and those that did not so well.

“At the end of the day, when I go on tape and look at Vic, it’s like, ‘OK, what is he doing in Philadelphia, how is he using these pieces, how is it different with his secondary pieces than what was in Miami? or even Chicago and, frankly, San Francisco? Because I think that was the best defense I’ve seen him coordinate. There is history between everyone in this league if you are blessed and lucky enough to line up and compete. You have to specify what he is doing in Philadelphia… I have always felt that Vic does a great job.”

Fangio isn’t the only coordinator McCarthy has history with. Eagles Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moorewho downplayed the matchup against his former team on Tuesday, was previously in Dallas for four seasons, including three under McCarthy. He spent last season as the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator before joining the Eagles this offseason.

“To be honest with you, when you look at Kellen with the LA Chargers and compare him to Philadelphia, there’s obviously a lot of carryover from their old offense to what they’re doing now. … Just look at the film, the facts, how they are using the players,” McCarthy told reporters. “I believe a lot in offensive systems. I have been fortunate to learn a West Coast offense from some of the best coaches I have ever met. And it’s a system that has the opportunity to continue to grow in variation and put your players in a position to succeed.

“Frankly, I see him doing that in Philadelphia. Saquon (Barkley) is playing as well as I’ve seen him play, and the way they run the ball and some of the things they do reflect how he played in the past and you can see the things that (Moore) is coming to the table. ”.

On Sunday, McCarthy can forget about the movie. You’ll get an up-close look at Moore’s Eagles offense, which has been one of the best in the NFL over the past four weeks.
