Travis Kelce says his brother Jason was ‘defending’ his family in phone breaking incident

Travis Kelce said his brother Jason Kelce He was defending his family when he reacted to a fan’s booing on Saturday. hitting the fan phone to the ground. The brothers discussed the incident, which led to a Penn State Police investigation and included Jason exchanging a homophobic slur with the fan, in an episode of his “New Heights Podcast” released Wednesday.

“I know it weighs on you, brother. …Everyone sharing the videos that are out there. I think that’s going to make the situation bigger than it really is,” Travis said on the podcast.

“But the real situation is that a damn clown came up to you and talked to you about your family and you reacted in a way that defended your family. And you may have used some words that you regret using. And that is a situation that you have to learn from and take ownership of.”

Jason, an ex Philadelphia Eagles center, was in State College to appear on “College GameDay,” which was in town for Saturday’s matchup between Penn State and Ohio State. While outside Beaver Stadium, a fan walking behind Jason can be heard on video using a homophobic slur about Taylor Swift and Travis’ relationship. The fan said, “Kelce, how does it feel that your brother is a fa… for dating Taylor Swift?”

Jason then turned around and appeared to grab the phone from the fan who said the insult and throw it to the ground. The fan demanded Jason give him his phone back and Jason responded, “Who’s the fa…now?”

Jason Kelce previously addressed the incident on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” and said he “wasn’t proud of it.” On the podcast, he expressed more remorse and said he’s “not happy with the situation.”

“My reaction gave it the time of day and also brought notoriety to the situation,” Jason said. “That’s what I regret. It didn’t deserve attention. It’s really stupid. And if I keep walking, it won’t be a hamburger. Nobody sees it. Now it’s out there and just perpetuating more hate.

“What I regret most is saying that word, to be honest with you. The word (the fan) used is simply ridiculous and takes it to another level. … It’s dehumanizing and it got under my skin.”

Travis praised his brother for “taking charge” of the situation and told Jason that “talking about it shows how sincere you are with a lot of people in this world.”

“Especially what you said Monday night that you… you don’t choose hate. “That’s just not who you are,” Travis said.

A spokesperson for Penn State University Police and Public Safety confirmed Tuesday that the department is investigating the incident and that the case review process is ongoing.
