JJ Watt is excited to see what his former teammate can do with Patrick Mahomes as his QB

Everything about the marriage between Kansas City Chiefs and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins feels pretty special these days.

The Chiefs acquired Hopkins in a trade with the Tennessee Titans less than two weeks ago as part of a strategy to shore up the offense, which had lost numerous pass catchers to injuries in the first half of the season. And while most fans probably expected positive returns from the deal given the weight of the need, few could have predicted how good Hopkins would look in KC.

Even since his first catch in his first game, which was a good first down for the Chiefs in Week 8, Hopkins has looked like a playmaker for KC. However, it was his incredibly strong performance in all areas of the game on Monday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that captivated the crowd, especially given his chemistry and trust with Patrick Mahomes, as illustrated by 2 touchdowns.

For the Chiefs, Hopkins’ arrival has been a breath of fresh air in a season in which names like Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice have been sidelined long-term. But it turns out Kansas City has been good to Hopkins, too. After years and years with the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals, playing for Andy Reid and company is a nice new chapter in his career.

On a recent episode of our Stacking the Box podcast, our friend Sterling Holmes sat down with legendary pass rusher JJ Watt, who was Hopkins’ long-time teammate at Texas. He spoke with Holmes about what both sides bring to the table in what is truly a win-win scenario.

“I mean, he’s got one of the best catch ratios in all of football,” Watt said. “He’s got some of the best hands in all of football. I’m really happy for D-Hop just because he’s been on some teams for a few years. He’s been on some teams and caught balls from a lot of quarterbacks. No disrespect to anyone else he’s gotten balls from, but he’s never gotten balls from a guy like Patrick Mahomes.

“So I’m really happy for him because now he gets to play with one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time on one of the greatest teams of all time,” he continued. “Hopefully I have the opportunity to do something very special.”
