The Attitude Era remains famous for its wild and unpredictable stories and not all of them are remembered fondly.

Possibly the most popular and unpredictable period In history, it spanned the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Arguably his greatest glory came at WrestleMania 14 in 1998, when Stone Cold Steve Austin, with the help of mike tysonHe became WWE Champion.

That was much to the distress of Mr. McMahon, the character behind the company’s owner. Vince Mc Mahonwho was born almost at the same time.

McMahon often placed himself at the center of storylines during the Attitude Era, winning championships and having major WrestleMania games, and not always against Austin.

In 1999, he was busy fighting The funeral director and his Ministry of Darkness when, at the Backlash PPV, his daughter Stephanie McMahon was ‘kidnapped’ by the menacing Taker and his gang of henchmen.

In scenes that are now enough to make you shudder a little, Stephanie was stopped by Undertaker and, incredibly, tied to a crucifix-like ‘symbol’, although WWE was, understandably, careful to avoid using that or similar terms on television.

However, poor Steph was brought to the ring by John Bradshaw Layfield, Farooq, Midon and Viscera before the Ministry began a strange sacrifice-style ‘black wedding’ ceremony on an episode of Monday Night Raw.

Speaking on Backstage Pass, Layfield talked about how surreal the whole segment was and the stern warning his good friend Farooq, Ron Simmons, gave him as they nervously walked down the ramp carrying their boss’s daughter.

“Ron and I were the ones who carried Stephanie on the cross,” he said. explained. “So I was certainly part of it, I was the delivery mechanism!

“Ron is sitting there looking at me and in that James Earl Jones voice he says, ‘Don’t drop it! Just don’t drop it.

“She’s tied up, she can’t do anything, so we have to make sure we take care of her, we have to carry her in the ring and put her head under the rope. We made sure to take care of Stephanie!

The younger McMahon was also, unsurprisingly, the nervous boss of the segment, with former WWE agent Gerald Brisco chiming in: “I’m sitting in the production meeting, looking at Stephanie and seeing the reactions on her face (when she said ) ‘we are going to tie you to a cross and then we are going to drag you there.’

“Give her credit, she was fantastic.”

While millions of people around the world tuned in to watch the strange story unfold, the thousands of attendees at the arena that same night were. Layfield, who won multiple championships as JBL, added: “I think they were scared. I was at the first Buried Alive match when we buried The Undertaker, and people thought we killed him!

“It wasn’t so much with the crucifixion, or whatever you call this, because it was a symbol, it wasn’t a cross!

“People were looking at him like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ “It was a little strange.”

Austin would end up foiling the ‘ceremony’ in which, in true WWE style, Vince McMahon turned out to be present the entire time as the main villain of the story, his own daughter used as a possible pawn.

Stephanie later faced what was arguably an even nastier argument for WWE from her father: Vince being portrayed as a father to your baby.
