Rotherham: Man who armed Manvers Hotel rioters with missiles jailed

The defendant claimed he had driven to the riot to “meddle”, the court heard, but text messages found on his phone talked about attending the scene and called it “cool”.

In a statement read to the court, a senior police officer called the disorder “the worst violence he has ever faced” due to the “extreme malice” shown.

Prosecutor Alisha Kaye said: “You openly allowed people to remove wooden panels from your truck, thereby acting in a joint enterprise with hostility towards those seeking asylum.”

Turton was acquitted of the charge of taking a vehicle without consent.

Judge Wright told him: “This incident damaged the reputation of Rotherham and South Yorkshire.

“It was a terrible experience for ordinary, decent citizens of the area, so their participation in it must be severely punished to protect the public.”

So far, more than 60 men have been jailed for their part in the riots outside the hotel.
