Gyokeres’ hat-trick helps Rubén Amorim humiliate Pep Guardiola’s team

Sporting CP Best Manchester City: Sporting CP has surprised Europe by humiliating Manchester City 4-1 in the fourth round match of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League. The victory has surely delighted Manchester United fans as it marked Ruben Amorim’s final game for Sportig CP as the Portuguese is set to take over the managerial reins at Old Trafford.

Sporting CP were too good for Manchester City as they outplayed them in every aspect to seal a memorable victory. It has been a week to forget for Pep Guardiola’s men, who have already accumulated three consecutive defeats in all competitions.

Their quadruple dream ended with their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspurs in the EFL Cup (their first defeat of the season); followed by a 2-1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth (their first league defeat of the season); and now a 4-1 humiliation at the hands of Sporting CP (their first UCL defeat of the season).

Viktor Gyokeres shines in the beating of Manchester City

The Swedish striker scored a sensational hat-trick to seal a comeback against the 2023 UEFA Champions League winners. The visitors surprised the home fans at the José Alvade Stadium in Lisbon, when Phil Foden took advantage of a defensive error to make it 1- 0 for Manchester City 4 minutes into the first half.

Viktor Gyokeres met Geovany Quenda’s pass and showed immense physical contact against the last defender to produce a sublime finish into the far corner of Ederson’s goal to make it 1-1.

The second half got off to a good start as Sporting CP scored within 20 seconds to take the lead. A perfect build-up from the kick-off, all the way back, and Pedro Gonçalves did well to find Maximiliano Araujo, who unleashed a brilliant shot on the edge of the Manchester City area that found the back of the net.

Things got worse for Manchester City, as the hosts were awarded a penalty 3 minutes later, when Josko Gvardiol fouled Trincao inside the area, and the penalty was taken by Viktor Gyokeres.

Erling Haaland’s miserable night saw him miss a crucial penalty, and the hosts made it 4-1 through another penalty, while Viktor Gyokeres completed his impressive hat-trick in the farewell match for his beloved coach, Ruben Amorim.
