Supreme Court of Justice will hear arguments in case

Read, 44, is accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, by drunkenly and intentionally hitting him with her Lexus SUV after dropping him off at an after-hours meeting at a fellow police officer’s home. The case, with its conflicting narratives surrounding the death of a police officer and allegations of government corruption, has drawn national attention. For months, pink-clad supporters attended Read’s court hearings.

In July, the jury told Judge Beverly Cannone they were hopelessly deadlocked and she declared a mistrial. But in the weeks that followed, several jurors contacted both the prosecution and defense to tell them that they had agreed that Read was not guilty of murder and leaving the scene, and only remained divided on the manslaughter charge for operating under the influence of alcohol.

Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey has promised to try Read again for all three reasons. A second trial is scheduled for January, although both sides They are trying to delay it until April.

Read’s lawyers say so would violate Read’s rights against double jeopardy be tried again for murder and leaving the scene. They filed a motion for Cannone to dismiss those charges or, alternatively, for Cannone to bring the jurors back to ask them for more information about what happened.
