Government cash to help rough sleepers in Sheffield

Sheffield City Council said the number of people registered as homeless had reached an all-time high in April.

More than 4,000 individuals or families had notified the authority that they were homeless in 2022-23, the latest figure available.

A council report said the number of homeless people living in the city’s B&Bs and hotels was at an “unsustainable and unaffordable level”, and that “urgent action” was needed.

Sheffield was chosen in 2023 to take part in a five-year campaign launched by the Prince of Wales aimed at ending homelessness in the UK.

The town is one of six places benefiting from Prince William’s Homewards charitable fund.

The minister said she would work with other government departments to address homelessness in the long term.

Other areas of South Yorkshire will also benefit from the grant.

Rotherham Council received £24,000, Doncaster £22,000 and Barnsley £35,000.

“In addition to the £10 million we are providing, the Chancellor announced an additional £233 million in the Budget to help tackle all forms of homelessness,” the minister added.

“This is a really challenging area, we’re not going to be able to solve it overnight, but we are absolutely determined to have both the long-term strategy and the immediate support that people desperately need right now.”
