‘He was full of life’: Firefighters urge public to think after veteran horse terrified by fireworks had to be put down

  • A 30-year-old horse that was a “fantastic companion” and “full of life” had to be put down after being terrified by fireworks that they would leave him nearby.

Firefighters from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service shared Claude’s story, urging people to let neighbors know if they plan to set off fireworks or attend organized displays.

“I share this post out of consideration for animals like Claude,” a spokesperson for the Newport Fire Station said.

“Claude was frightened by the fireworks and in a frantic state ended up in a position from which he could not get up.”

The spokesperson said crews from Newport and the service’s animal rescue unit were dispatched to the scene and worked hard to remove Claude from his barn.

“Unfortunately, Claude did not have the strength to get up after being exhausted and in an uncomfortable position,” the spokesperson added. “The entire Newport team is thinking about Claire and her family at this difficult time.

“This type of incident affects everyone involved and can be very traumatic. So please, if you plan on setting off fireworks, let your neighbors know. If you can, go to an organized event.”

Claire thanked the fire service, especially the Newport team.

“Claude, a veteran from the Qunedon, Clavering and Newport bridleways and photographed here at the Newmarket gallops during a charity event, melted in his stable,” he said.

“It is the every horse owner’s dilemma Whether to keep the horse in the stable or in the pasture during fireworks season. This time I chose wrong.

“The kindness and consideration shown by the crew was incredible and I will always be grateful, but unfortunately, once removed from the barn, the attending vet recommended that Claude be euthanized. RIP Claude, a fantastic companion on many adventures.”
