Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 6 (IANS): The Kerala cabinet, which met here on Wednesday with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the chair, sanctioned Rs 4 lakh each to the family members of the four people who died in the huge blast at the Anjootambalam Veererkavu temple in Nileshwaram last week after the firecrackers. saved for a function caught fire.

Last week, the Vijayan government decided to take care of the medical bills of all the victims.

Some 154 people were injured in the explosions and fire and around 100 of them are still under treatment, including 15 people in intensive care units of several hospitals.

The four deceased, identified as Shibin Raj, Biju, Ratheesh and Sandeep, were around 30 years old.

While Shibhin Raj died on Monday, the other three succumbed to their burns last week.

The fireworks accident during the temple festival occurred on Monday night last week and local authorities said it was a glaring omission on the part of the temple authorities who did not comply with the safety protocols to be followed when setting off the firecrackers

Among the injured were those who had come to witness the popular ‘Theyyam’ ritual, which attracts local people in large numbers as it is an event observed in temples, mainly in Kannur and Kasargod districts. .

Police detained three officials for questioning after the tragedy and registered their arrest, but a local court granted them bail. However, the district court canceled the bail.

Kasargod Superintendent of Police D. Shilpa said authorities did not comply with security protocols and also did not have any permit for the event. After the district court canceled the bail, it became clear that there was gross negligence on the part of the authorities.

After the accident, the temple canceled all subsequent events, while other temples began strictly following the guidelines issued by the authorities in bursting crackers.
