Incumbent Mike Detoy appeared to be leading the race to retain his Hermosa Beach City Council seat on Tuesday, Nov. 5, after the Los Angeles County Recorder’s Office released its first rounds of updated results for the 2024 general election. .

four others Candidates compete to fill the second vacancy on the Municipal Council, including Janis “Jani” Lange, Michael Keegan, Brian Sheil and Elka Worner.

Detoy obtained almost 27% of the votes, around 11:50 pm on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night, Detoy said he was “cautiously optimistic” about the results.

“I just want to make sure everyone’s vote is counted,” Detoy said, “and I’m very honored to be in this position with early results.”

Keegan, a former councilor and business owner, followed Detoy with almost 25%; Lange, a municipal commissioner and businessman, came in third place with almost 22%. Veteran journalist Elka Worner had almost 20%, followed by comedian and producer Brian Sheil had almost 7%.

Councilman Justin Massey declined to run for another term, but Detoy, a Riverside fire captain, hopes to win back his seat for another term.
