Saints GM Mickey Loomis reveals his stance on the search for a new head coach

He The New Orleans Saints had some heartfelt changes of heart after a Week 9 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Dennis Allen is now known as a former head coach and CB Marshon Lattimore now employed by the Washington Commanders. Special teams coach Darren Rizzi was elevated to the top job, but general manager Mickey Loomis stopped speculation about the Saints’ next captain.

Loomis revealed his position on the Saints looking for a new head coach with WWL Radio’s Mike Hoss.

“That’s not something we’re going to be very active in right now. There will be plenty of time for that when the season is over,” Loomis stated. “Our focus has to be on our team, our players, our coaches and our staff. “You learn more about who you have and the people you work with in adversity than when things are going well.”

It’s never a good sign in New Orleans when something causes someone in the city to bring up Hurricane Katrina. Loomis did so without much pushback from the local radio legend, which is a small sign of how dire fans find the current situation.

“Although Katrina and that whole experience was difficult in 2005, we learned a lot about the people who were with the Saints at that time,” Loomis explained. “This drove a lot of decisions after that. Look, this is adversity, this is hard. It’s no fun losing games. It’s, you know, I can’t describe to you how bad our fans feel.”

The organization is a mosaic of people from all over the city and the bayou. Many were born fanatics so they would know pain.

“Believe me, we all feel 10 times worse, but we can’t just wallow in it,” Loomis said. “You have to get up off the mat and show some fight. That’s true for every person in this building. We will see what we have in the next eight weeks.”

Loomis also shared some ideas on how ‘Pissed off’ interim head coach Darren Rizzi prepared for the first day as the new captain in Crescent City.

“(Rizzi) did a great job. We talked about what his message would be beforehand and I thought it was well received,” Loomis said, “And look, any time you have a midseason change, you’re going to have some emotion involved with it. Hopefully that excitement creates a little positive momentum and I felt like that happened yesterday. I thought Rizzi did a great job talking to the team, talking to the media, outlining some things we wanted to do differently, just to hopefully push forward the second half of the season.”

The Saints have a difficult schedule to finish the regular season. Next up are the division-leading Atlanta Falcons (6-3) in New Orleans. Putting hated rivals in front of home fans now will be a big indicator of how everyone responds before the general manager begins the search for a new head coach.
