Indian woman desperate to stay in UK offers to work for free and is criticized online

The publication caused mixed reactions among social media users.

An Indian woman has sparked an online row after offering to work without pay in the UK in a desperate bid to remain in the country. On LinkedIn, Swetha Kothandan, who earned her master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Leicester, spoke about her journey after moving to the UK in 2021 with aspirations of achieving greatness. However, after graduating in 2022, the student said she had been tirelessly searching for a visa-sponsored job in the UK, but had yet to find one. Now, faced with the risk of being deported, the woman offered to work for free for a month. Not only this, she also said that her employer could fire her without notice or compensation if she was not satisfied with her work. He even promised to work overtime and no weekly breaks, just so he could stay in the UK.

“Hire me for free for a month. If I don’t deliver, fire me on the spot, no questions asked. My graduate visa EXPIRES in 3 months, repost this to help me stay in the UK,” the woman pleaded on LinkedIn. .

“The job market feels there is no value in me, my degree or my skills… I have applied for over 300 jobs and have received some helpful feedback. This LinkedIn post is my LAST chance to secure a future at long term in the UK,” he wrote.

The Indian student wrote that she is seeking a “visa-sponsored design engineering position” and highlighted her qualifications in her position. He boldly offered to work 12 hours a day, seven days a week to prove his worth. In addition to this, she also said that her employers could fire her without notice or compensation if she was dissatisfied with her work.

“If you are a UK employer hiring for Design Engineer positions, you will not regret hiring me. I will work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week to prove myself. If you are an international student reading this, I would be forever Thank you if you could republish this,” she concluded.

The woman’s post, which was shared a month ago, went viral on LinkedIn and reddit. It got mixed reactions on social media. While some criticized the woman for doing everything “ridiculous” to avoid returning to work, others criticized her for creating unrealistic expectations for employers.

“Responsibly ruining the image of Indians abroad and in turn severely damaging the chances of those genuine candidates who can make it big abroad. This is usually the case with most rich or spoiled people who don’t think about it twice before pursuing a master’s degree abroad, and when reality hits them in the face towards the end of the graduate program, it’s game over,” one user wrote.

“Working for free-thinking companies wouldn’t take advantage of it and creating all this hell is crazy, in this job market. Why the fuck do these graduates do it? In the name of wanting to be slaves?” commented another.

“If this is real, I would understand (although I think it is a trick to gain influence). They went there because they couldn’t get good jobs here. If they are returned with a debt of 40 liters in the Indian labor market, “They are cooked. Working for free is illegal, so obviously they will get paid, but whatever that amount is, their visa will be extended, it will give them time to stabilize,” said a third user.

“The desperation is palpable. They will do anything to avoid returning to India,” said a fourth.

Some users, however, empathized with the woman and shared that it could be due to the student loan she is desperately trying to find a job in the UK for. “I can’t imagine what’s going through his mind right now: in 30 days he has to get a job or he will return to India with a huge loan to pay,” one user wrote.

“There is no need to do this just to stay in the UK. Believe in yourself: if you are smart and capable, you will shine anywhere in the world,” said another.
