A Lethbridge police officer has been charged in connection with a physical altercation that took place while he was on duty at a detention center.

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) said the incident occurred on May 10, 2023 at its short-term detention facility.

The altercation, which took place while a prisoner was being searched, did not result in any injuries.

“The matter came to light upon review of the officer’s use of force report, a document that must be submitted when any use of force other than cooperative handcuffing and escort techniques is used,” LPS said in the statement.

The professional standards unit investigated the incident and referred it to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service.

Upon review of the investigation, prosecutors recommended an assault charge for Chris Stock, a member of the LPS for 23 years.

He is scheduled to appear in court on December 10. He has been assigned administrative duties pending the outcome of the court case.
