Who is on the ballot? Compare candidates on issues

When it comes to issues Mississippi voters care about when they vote Tuesday, issues related to the economy, health care and border security top the list.

Election experts have also said that what state voters are most concerned about is the average cost of living, job creation and other forms of economic development.

“The biggest problem tends to be economic based,” Stennis Institute CEO Dallas Breen said earlier this year. “So that’s inflation, cost of gas, cost of living. We have one of the lowest per capita incomes and household incomes in the country. So when it’s most expensive to live, it hits the average Mississippi and harder than other states “

Tangentially, Breen said issues on the national and state stage, such as border security, health rights and Medicaid expansion, are also on voters’ minds as they choose who to vote for in these primaries.

Not all of the Mississippi candidates running for seats in the U.S. House and Senate have expressed public opinions on the swing issues, but here are some of the issues they’ve brought up as the Magnolia State heads to the polls. urns:

Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District: Kelly v. Black

In Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District, Republican incumbent Trent Kelly faces Democrat Dianne Black.

Kelly, who did not face a primary opponent this year, serves on the House Armed Services Committee as chairman of the Maritime Power and Projection Forces Subcommittee. Kelly also serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence as chairman of the Defense Intelligence and Air Architecture Subcommittee. Additionally, Kelly serves on the House Agriculture Committee.

Black doesn’t appear to be running on any specific policy agenda, but he told the Clarion Ledger earlier this year that he’s running on a promise to help maintain and increase the number of Democrats in Congress. He also plans to be a pro-Biden and Harris congressman and support Democratic leadership.

Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District: Thompson v. Eller

In District 2, Democratic incumbent Bennie Thompson is running against Republican challenger Ron Eller.

Thompson, who has held his seat since 1993, is running again and hopes to focus on nutrition access and food security for people in his district, as well as helping fix problems at the state’s rural hospitals. He is also an advocate for Medicaid expansion and increased job creation in Mississippi.

Ron Eller said in a written statement to the Clarion Ledger that he wants to focus on improving educational standards in both schools and prisons. He also believes in creating an environment where people can become educated and get more jobs.

Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District: Guest running unopposed

U.S. House Rep. Michael Guest, a Republican, is running unopposed this year.

Jarvis Gordon, who qualified to run against Guest as a Democrat, withdrew from the race in late February.

Mississippi’s 4th Congressional District: Ezell v. Raybon

Republican incumbent Mike Ezell is running against Democrat Craig Raybon.

Ezell was elected in 2022, replacing former seat holder Steven Palazzo. Some of his campaign priorities, as stated in his website, They are anti-abortion legislation, support for law enforcement, border security, focus on domestic policy issues, and support for the military.

“In Congress, I am working hard to grow our economy through lower taxes and fewer regulations, and to secure America’s southern border to stop illegal immigration,” Ezell said in a written response to the Clarion Ledger. “As a former law enforcement official for 40 years, I have seen firsthand the problems that illegal immigration and drugs are causing, which is why we must end this border crisis now.”

Raybon did not respond to several requests to discuss his campaign.

Its website states that it cares about women’s rights, health care, employment opportunities and increasing wages.

United States Senate in Mississippi: Wicker vs. Pinkins

In the US Senate race in Mississippi, Republican incumbent Roger Wicker faces Democratic challenger Ty Pinkins.

Key issues Wicker is campaigning on include protecting the U.S. border by building a wall, Second Amendment gun rights, economic growth, the anti-abortion movement, and increasing military spending.

Pinkins launched his campaign for U.S. Senate last year before backing down to run an unsuccessful campaign for Mississippi Secretary of State. After his loss, Pinkins announced in January that he would return to run for the United States Senate.

Pinkins said he is running for criminal justice reform, access to affordable health care, education reform throughout Mississippi and across the country, ensuring affordable housing, countering voter suppression, investing in sustainable energy and economic development .
