Meet the four NASCAR championship contenders ahead of the Phoenix finale

This weekend marks the end of the 2024 NASCAR season, with three championships still to be decided as we approach the final round in Phoenix.

Four drivers from each series (Cup, Xfinity and Trucks) are eligible for the championship this weekend, with the best finish of each four taking the title. Let’s meet our contenders before the weekend begins in full force.

NASCAR Cup Series Championship Contenders

Tyler Reddick: No. 45 23XI Racing

Tyler Reddick punched his ticket to the Playoffs by winning Talladega and Michigan earlier in the year, but his path to the championship has not been easy. He had a series of poor results at the beginning of the Playoffs, aggravated by a withdrawal in Las Vegas. His victory at Homestead guaranteed him a spot in the Championship 4, but of all the drivers competing for a title at Phoenix, Reddick is perhaps the most unpredictable.

Joey Logano: Team Penske number 22

Of the four drivers competing for a title at Phoenix, Penske’s Joey Logano is the most experienced. He has competed in more than 570 races and already has two championships under his belt, both won in the era of the final Playoff format. With wins in Atlanta, Nashville and Las Vegas, Logano has been strong all season, with a notable increase in performance in this second half of the season (although many say that’s because Ford finally figured out its machinery).

Ryan Blaney: Team Penske number 12

Ryan Blaney’s victory at Martinsville earned him a spot in the Championship 4, allowing him to defend his 2023 title. Blaney had a rough start to the year with the Daytona 500, but followed that up with three top-five finishes in quick succession, followed by victories at Iowa and Pocono. This has arguably been Blaney’s strongest year in the NASCAR Cup Series, making him a strong title contender.

William Byron: No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports

William Byron snuck into the Championship 4 at Martinsville after his closest rival, Christopher Bell, was disqualified for a wall move similar to the one used by Ross Chastain in 2022. The Chevy driver’s path to the playoffs was paved early 2024, when he won the Daytona 500, and his consistency in the Playoffs have kept his title hopes alive until Phoenix.

NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff Contenders

The Cup Series isn’t the only series deciding its champion this weekend, and in Xfinity, the four drivers facing off are Austin Hill, AJ Allmendinger, Cole Custer and Justin Allgaier.

Austin Hill He started 2024 with back-to-back wins and has been extremely consistent all year. He may be the favorite for the Xfinity title, if only because of his strengths all season.

That said, Cole Custer He has also been extremely strong in 2024. Although he has not converted his performance into outright wins, he has been able to make the most of each race weekend and as the reigning 2023 Xfinity Series champion.

Former Cup driver AJ Allmendinger He may seem like an easy pick for the championship thanks to his overall experience, but his only win this year came in Las Vegas, and his results in Phoenix in the past have been poor.

That leaves us with Justin Allgaiera pilot with extensive experience but perhaps not with the resume of results that one would expect. This year marks his seventh appearance in a Championship 4; On all other occasions, he failed to achieve the title, although anything could be possible this year.

NASCAR Trucks Series Playoff Contenders

The first championship that will decide his victory this weekend will be the NASCAR Trucks Series, where Corey Heim, Christian Eckes, Grant Enfinger and Ty Majeski have secured their place.

Ty Majeski is perhaps the most unpredictable of the four potential truck champions (although it can be much more difficult to make sweeping judgments on far less experienced drivers!). However, Majeski has been mostly fine for the past few years; It hasn’t made huge strides in terms of performance, but it hasn’t gone backwards either. It is an option for a champion, but not the favorite.

Grant Enfinger is perhaps the most interesting driver on this entire list; After a relatively mediocre season, he jumped into the Playoffs with some success, posting two wins and four top 10 finishes as the season drew to a close. His luck in Phoenix hasn’t been spectacular in the past, but this could be the year he makes a change.

Corey Heim He has almost as many wins this year as his other three rivals for the title setmaking him an extremely strong championship contender. Plus, just missing out on the title in 2023 will likely make him even hungrier to accomplish the feat in 2024.

That leaves us with Christian Eckeswhose overall performance has been impressively consistent this year and who already has experience winning in Phoenix. However, he has made some enemies in the process, so his performance this weekend may be determined by a resentful rival.
