GWCL to take legal action against defaulting customers

By Emmanuel Gamson

Takoradi, November 5, GNA – Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, Acting Western Region Director of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), says the company is compiling the list of defaulting customers in the region to prosecute them for debt and non-payment of water bills.

It said that in October this year, its records showed that customers in the western region owed GWCL about GHC23 million and that the company was taking steps to prosecute defaulters in court.

In an interview, he said: “We are compiling the list of all the customers who have been disconnected but have not paid their bills and we are sending them to court because we need the money to run our operations.”

Nana Barnie encouraged delinquent customers to clear their arrears to avoid being dragged to court, saying: “We are very willing to use all legal means to recover all the arrears that people owe us.”

He stated that GWCL was no longer a subsidized organization and that they relied on invoices to carry out their daily activities, however, non-payment was a challenge to their work.

“We are pleading with our customers to pay their water bills to help us carry out our daily activities; Otherwise, the time will come when GWCL will find it difficult to purchase chemicals to treat water, fuel and other operational elements due to lack of supply. -payment of water bills,” he added.

Nana Barnie asked customers to take advantage of GWCL’s e-payment platforms to pay their bills conveniently.

“To make it easier for customers to pay their bills, we have introduced e-payment mode and they do not need to walk to any payment point, bank or GWCL office.

He said customers can use the GWCL mobile app or other platforms and pay to help provide them with better service.
