Indiana Republican House candidate arrested on election eve

TO republican candidate for the Indiana House of Representatives was arrested on the eve of his election for allegedly violating a protective order, according to the Lafayette Journal & Courier.

Jim Schenke, the Republican candidate for House District 26, was arrested Monday morning and booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail following a report Sunday around 8:35 p.m. that he had allegedly contacted the victim, who has a protection order against him. the outlet reports, citing Tippecanoe County Deputy Chief Terry Ruley.

He was taken to jail around 6:30 a.m., the outlet reports. He is no longer on the jail’s inmate list.

Schenke has two protective orders against him issued by a local attorney and his staff. Schenke also has a protective order against a man who lives in his West Lafayette neighborhood, the Lafayette Journal & Courier reports, citing the state registry.

The Exponent reports that Schenke allegedly contacted someone with a warrant against him through a post on facebookwhich led to his arrest.

Ruley said officers who investigated the complaint determined there was probable cause to make an arrest on charges of violating one of the protective orders.

“Part of the order is not to have any direct or indirect contact and that does include social networks,” Tippecanoe County Sheriff Robert Goldsmith he said, according to The Exponent. “The (victim) … made a post on Facebook and Mr. Schenke commented on it, so he was arrested for invasion of privacy.”

Schenke took to Facebook to refute the allegations.

“For anyone who cares about honesty, I have been accused of violating a protective order,” Schenke says. “The truth is, I have a protective order against the sociopath who has been stalking and threatening me for months.”

On Sunday, Schenke also posted a video on Facebook of blue-lit emergency phone booths around Purdue University campuses, one of which is in the background.

He describes himself as a former journalist and publicist and says the prevalence of phone booths underlines that women are prone to sexual attack and that these attacks are being covered up. He promised to address the problem.

Schenke faces incumbent Chris Campbell, a Democrat, for indiana House District 26 headquarters.

Last month, Schenke allegedly drove his camper trailer into a utility pole while the vehicle was unsecured. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance, but the charge was dropped, according to Exponent.

The Tippecanoe County Board of Elections also accused him of improperly including political warnings in campaign ads, while the Republican politician has two recent civil charges against the government, both related to his campaign, the outlet reports.
