The Board of Editors condemns threats to press freedom

The Board of Editors has strongly condemned attempts to undermine press freedom and disrupt the practice of independent journalism.

At a meeting yesterday (Nov 4) at the Daily Star office, the council urged the interim government to take strict measures against “collective justice”, including actions within media organisations, according to a statement issued today (Nov 4). November), signed by the president of the council, Mahfuz Anam, and the secretary general, Dewan Hanif Mahmud.

The council also requested that all parties involved refrain from activities that undermine press freedom.

Despite repeated assurances from the interim government and other relevant parties, the Board of Editors noted that attempts to undermine the country’s media freedom continue from certain sectors of society.

“There have recently been incidents of threats, attacks and sieges at the offices of several major newspapers in the country,” the statement read. “The newspaper Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, among others, have asked law enforcement to increase security at their headquarters.”

The Board of Editors believed that if anyone has objections to the news or editorial policies of any newspaper, they should express their opinions in writing.

However, attempts to repress the media through threats and intimidation are a repeat of the previous regime, the statement added.

Mahfuz Anam, also editor and publisher of The Daily Star, Editor of Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman, Editor of Manabzamin Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Editor of New Age Nurul Kabir, Editor of Ajker Potrika Md Golam Rahman, Editor of Financial Express Shamsul Huq Zahid, Editor by Jugantor Saiful Alam, Ittefaq Editor Tasmima Hossain, Dewan Hanif Mahmud, also editor and publisher of Bonik Barta newspaper, Sangbad editor Altamash Kabir, Dhaka Tribune editor Zafar Sobhan, Desh editor were present at the meeting. Rupantor, Mustafa Mamun, and Sangbad executive editor Shahriar Karim.
