Los Angeles County medical examiner identifies victim who drowned in capsized boat off Redondo Beach coast

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — New details have emerged after a Man found dead inside capsized boat in front of Redondo Beach.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the drowning victim as 56-year-old Fredrico Salguero.

The incident occurred about two miles offshore from the Avenue C lifeguard tower around 1 pm on Sunday.

Authorities responded to a 26-foot MacGregor boat, a dual-purpose boat that can operate as a sailboat and a motorboat, overturned where five people were clinging to the side, including a child and the boat’s captain.

But a sixth person who had been on the boat had not surfaced and was believed to be trapped inside. Rescue divers found the victim after searching underwater for about 45 minutes. He died at the scene.

Lifeguards and others familiar with the area say wind conditions that day were not ideal for small boats.

“We’ve had some pretty windy conditions since the jump this morning,” said Capt. Pono Barnes of the Los Angeles County Fire Rescue. “It was pretty rough on the water. We only have one flag today. It was a gale warning. If you plan on boating or going out on the water, maybe I would reassess and wait for calmer conditions.”

“They go out in their boats. They don’t really know anything about the navigation aspect of ocean conditions: how nasty they can be out there. And when you go out, the water rises quickly,” said Bill Schwaneberg of Marine Technology Engineering.

The investigation continues but at this time it is unknown how the boat capsized.
