Patrick Mahomes: DeAndre Hopkins will get even better as he figures out the offense

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ second game with the Chiefs showed why the team traded with the Titans to acquire him last month.

Hopkins caught four passes in the first quarter and then hauled in a 35-yard throw from Patrick Mahomes despite having defenders around him. That catch set up a one-yard touchdown and Hopkins added a second touchdown with just under five minutes left in the game.

Mahomes found Hopkins once again on the winning drive in overtime and the veteran finished the night with eight receptions for 86 yards. In his postgame press conference, Hopkins said he was “more comfortable” that in his debut with the Chiefs and Mahomes believes that even bigger things await his new teammate.

“I think that as he realizes “The whole offense is going to get even better, because there are times it’s going to go places and I’m like, man, there’s a time and a place for that, but that’s what makes it great,” Mahomes said. “You give him a chance on the field and he makes a play. . . . “To have a guy like that who can go up and catch through a crowd of defenders is a special type of player.”

In addition to his own numbers, Hopkins’ presence appears to be helping tight end Travis Kelce. He had 14 receptions for 100 yards on Monday night and 24 receptions for 190 yards in two weeks with the wide receiver in the lineup. All the numbers suggest that the Hopkins move will end up being very good for the Chiefs.
