Netflix had previously announced that season 3 would come in 2025, and recent comments from creator Hwang Dong-hyuk suggest it could be even sooner than we thought.

The screenwriter and director said The Hollywood Reporter that it’s “almost done with the editing portion of Season 3,” meaning it could possibly release in the spring or summer of 2025, though that’s mere speculation at the moment.

Squid Game’s third season will be its last, and Hwang will explain why he decided to end his mega hit there, instead of dragging it out for several more seasons.

“When I was thinking about the idea of ​​the season three finale, I think it naturally occurred to me that this was the end,” he explained.

“I thought with that story I could tell everything I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in Gi-hun’s perspective as a character, and I thought we didn’t need any more stories from here.”

Hwang went on to describe the show’s second season as “crazy,” with the recent trailer teases the return of the fan-favorite game Red Light, Green Light and even more anarchy on the walls of the Squid Game complex.

The creator described main character Gi-hun as “broken” from the events of the first season, and actor Lee Jung-jae (The Acolyte) agreed that fans should expect his trauma to have changed him.

“Gi-hun has experienced too many things, witnessed too many deaths, to go back to the way he was before, no matter how hard he tries,” he said (via THR).

“The way you see Gi-hun in Season 1 and the state you see him in in Season 2 are very different.”
