Juan Soto among the 13 who will receive qualified offers from former teams

Thirteen free agents received qualifying offers from their former teams on Monday before free agency officially began at 5 p.m. ET. Among those who submitted the offer, which is a one-year, $21.05 million contract for the 2025 season:

ET on November 19 to decide whether to accept the offer, which is calculated annually based on the average annual value of Major League Baseball’s top 125 contracts.

The most sought-after free agents have historically rejected the proposal of entering free agency in search of a multi-year contract. Only 13 of 131 players have accepted a qualifying offer since it was introduced after the 2012 season. Last year, all seven players submitted the deal, worth $20.325 million, and rejected it.

Clubs can give a player a qualifying offer only if the player has been with the team continuously since Opening Day and has never previously received a qualifying offer.

The right-hander of the Dodgers Walker Buhler, San Diego Padres gardener Jurickson Profarand second baseman for the Yankees Gleyber Torres They were among the free agents who were not extended the qualifying offer.

Teams that lose a player who received a qualifying offer receive a compensation pick. Clubs that sign players who rejected the qualifying offer before the following year’s amateur draft must forfeit draft compensation and could also lose money from the international bonus fund. The potential sanctions have not affected the earning potential of top-tier free agents, but have hampered the market for mid-level players.

Teams that go over the competitive balance tax line in 2024 and sign a player tied to a qualifying offer may lose their second- and fifth-highest picks in the upcoming amateur draft. They also lose $1 million from their international bonus pool. Revenue sharing organizations lose their third-highest draft pick. The others lose their second-highest draft pick and $500,000 from their international bonus pool.
