Pitt County Schools appoint first African-American superintendent

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – History was made when an East Carolina county school district named a new superintendent this afternoon.

The Pitt County Board of Education voted to name Dr. Steve Lassiter as permanent superintendent during a 5:00 p.m. meeting.

Lassiter is the first African-American to hold office in Pitt County.

WITN reported on May 6 that Lassiter would take over as interim superintendent after former superintendent Dr. Ethan Lenker retired.

Lassiter had been the school district’s deputy superintendent. The Edenton native began his educational career in 2004 as a teacher after graduating from ECU.
