HARDEMAN CO., Tenn. (WMC) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has been called to Hardeman County after a man accused of shooting two women and fleeing with a baby was killed while evading a state trooper on Monday afternoon.

One of the women is in critical condition at Memphis Regional One Hospital. The other is receiving treatment at a hospital in Jackson, Tennessee.

Hardeman County deputies initially responded to the shooting on Highway 18 near the Madison County line around 1:20 p.m.

TBI now says the shooting stemmed from a domestic situation.

The alleged shooter sped from the scene with a baby until a Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) trooper intercepted the getaway car around 1:30 p.m.

According to TBI, the suspect refused to stop and shot the officer, who returned fire.

The driver crashed just south of Highway 100 and was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.

The baby was sent to a local hospital for treatment; The baby’s condition is unknown at this time.

No law enforcement officers were injured.
