New Haven man sentenced to 20 years for attempted murder of police officer

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – A New Haven man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for several crimes, including the attempted murder of a police officer.

In September, José Claudio, 38, pleaded guilty. to attempted murder, assault on public safety/EMT/public transportation or medical care personnel, two counts of criminal possession of a firearm and menacing.

On October 7, 2022, New Haven Police Officer Chad Curry reported hearing a crash at Chapel Street and Blatchley Avenue.

When he responded, Claudio shot Curry nine times.

Curry returned fire but was shot in the left ear and right shoulder.

A month earlier, Claudio threatened a woman with a firearm in the Fair Haven section of New Haven.

Today, Claudio was sentenced to 20 years in prison for both events.

Officer Curry is still employed with the police department, but has been limited to light or restricted duties. He still has a bullet lodged in his shoulder.
