Driver injures firefighter at scene of downed power line in Detroit

Detroit firefighters were at the scene of a downed power line across the street from a hit-and-run accident when a speeding driver knocked over a pole, injuring one of the first responders.

“I have an injured firefighter who has been transported to the hospital,” said 4th Battalion Chief Dave Miller, DFD.

It happened shortly after 1 a.m. Monday with power lines down in Greenfield in Midland.

Fortunately, the woman, the injured firefighter, is expected to recover.

Lolita Loggins lives nearby; heard the initial crash and saw firefighters and DTE Energy tending to downed wires. She says she saw the cars still driving by the scene.

“The cars kept going, they didn’t stop, there were about four fire trucks, they didn’t stop at all,” he said.

“A car apparently sped through the scene snagging the wire, pulling the broken pole down and knocking over some of our staff,” Miller said.

Loggins saw them fall.

“(I said) ‘Where did the pole come from? Is there anyone under the pole?’ and (I saw) him kneeling,” he said. “I said what happened and the car kept going.”

The car didn’t stop.

“One of the female firefighters, I think she got caught by one of the hot wires, I think one of her feet got caught by one of the hot wires, because she was jumping too, so it was dangerous,” Loggins said.

First responders already have very dangerous jobs: If you see them at a scene, slow down, walk away, and let them do their job, Miller says.

“It’s vitally important to stay away,” he said. “If you see flashing lights, it indicates there is an emergency scene. We need our drivers to remember to slow down when they see flashing lights and move off the road.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detroit police at 313-267-4600.
