Ellenwood man sentenced to 20 years for assaulting stepfather

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – An Ellenwood man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to attacking his stepfather, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s office.

The district attorney’s office said Jarvis Oneal Cloption, 53, was staying with his 72-year-old stepfather after being released from prison. Around 1 a.m. on Sept. 4, 2020, while his stepfather was sleeping, the district attorney’s office said Cloption attacked him and demanded money.

Cloption began stabbing his stepfather repeatedly in the face, neck and under the arm before throwing him to the ground and stealing his wallet, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said a friend of the victim also stayed at the house and tried to intervene after hearing cries for help, and was also stabbed in the face, arm and back of the head.

Cloption’s stepfather was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and his friend was taken to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Cloption pleaded guilty to two counts of elder abuse and three counts of aggravated assault on Nov. 1, according to the district attorney’s office.
