News and notes

1. Bowen Byram remained paired defensively with Rasmus Dahlin after the two teamed up in Detroit on Saturday.

The Sabers attempted to outscore the Red Wings 27-6 with Dahlin and Byram sharing the ice at 5-on-5, according to Natural Stat Trick. Dahlin alone had 13 shot attempts.

“I thought the puck movement getting up the ice was really good, it helped us offensively quite a few times when we got to the zone, we had a lot of time in the zone,” Ruff said. “Sometimes we didn’t have enough attack time. But I thought overall getting on the ice was pretty good with those two guys.”

2. Ruff said there’s a “good chance” Jacob Bryson will be in the lineup against the Senators after the defenseman impressed in his debut against the Red Wings. Bryson spent that game paired with Mattias Samuelsson, but skated Monday alongside Owen Power.

“I think he’s a very smart, trustworthy guy,” Ruff said. “That first pass is good. The attention to detail in zone D was good. And that’s also because I haven’t played for a long time.”

3. Ruff was asked how the Sabers can establish consistency after the 2-1 loss in Detroit, a game they controlled in pieces at 5-on-5 but lost as a result of special teams.

“Not accepting that is enough,” Ruff said. “Not accepting that we have done many good things. “We have to win games, that’s the key. Raise the bar, raise expectations. I’m not going to stay here talking about it. We did good things, but we finished the good things, we finished those great opportunities, but in the back of the net. “That’s what we’re here for.”
