Hail of gunfire leaves man dead on grandfather’s porch as Birmingham ties 2023 homicide total

A young man was killed in a hail of gunfire Monday midday in a north Birmingham neighborhood.

The victim is the 135th homicide in the city this year, the same Number of people murdered in Birmingham in all of 2023.

Gunshots were heard at 12:12 pm in the 1600 block of Fifth Street North. That location is in the Enon Ridge neighborhood.

Sergeant. LaQuitta Wade said more than 20 shots were fired. He said it was not immediately clear if the victim or someone else came back shot.

Wade said an argument preceded the fatal shootings.

Police radio communications indicated a somewhat chaotic scene, with at least one woman taking shelter under a vehicle for fear of gunfire.

She called 911 several times before police convinced her that the immediate threat of danger was over.

More than a dozen distraught relatives and friends gathered at the scene, visibly emotional.

The victim’s father ran through the police perimeter trying to reach his son, but police were able to reach him and prevent him from continuing further.

A man at the scene identified himself to AL.com as the victim’s grandfather and said the victim was 22 years old.

Wade said no arrests have been made.

Across Jefferson County there have been 170 homicides, including 135 in Birmingham.
