Manitoba publishes strategy for the province’s mineral future

The Manitoba government has launched a strategy to secure the province’s mining future, with a focus on accelerating the delivery of critical mineral projects, while respecting the environment and building Indigenous partnerships.

“Manitoba has what the world needs,” Economic Development Minister Jamie Moses said at a news conference Monday.

“We know that securing our supply chain for critical minerals, especially as we expect demand to double by 2040, makes having this type of strategy even more important.”

The province’s strategy aims to attract investment and create jobs through actions that include the creation of a Critical Minerals Office, investment in regional infrastructure projects and the development of a mining revenue sharing model in partnership with the indigenous communities.

“This strategy highlights that here in Manitoba we are located right in the center of a continent, right at the link between the Atlantic corridors, the Asian corridors and the Pacific corridors,” Moses said.

“The fact that we have a connection from the United States to Mexico and we have our own deepwater port at the Port of Churchill… All things that give us the Manitoba advantage.”

In addition to publishing the strategy, the government is also investing $2 million in the Manitoba Mineral Development Fund and helping to review guidelines for early mineral exploration.

The federal government has identified 34 minerals as critical to promoting green energy and sustainable economic success. Manitoba has 30 of these minerals.
