Bail set at $25,000 for two Canton officers charged in Frank Tyson’s death

CANTON, Ohio (WOIO) – Two Canton police officers charged in connection with the death of Frank Tyson while in police custody waived their appearance in Stark County Court of Common Pleas for a bond hearing Monday.

Tyson’s family members, as well as other Canton police officers, were inside the courtroom for the hearing.

Officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch were indicted on the charge of reckless homicide and have been in the Stark County Jail since Nov. 1.

The Tyson family’s attorney, Bobby DiCello, said at the hearing that he was letting the court decide bail, but asked that the presence of more than 50 officers in court not influence his decision.

Judge Taryn Heath set bail in each case at $25,000 and scheduled their arraignment for Nov. 8 at 8:30 a.m.

If convicted of the felony, the officers could face up to 36 months in prison, a $10,000 fine and loss of their jobs.

Tyson, 53, died in police custody on April 18 after fleeing a traffic accident in Canton.

According to the Stark County Prosecutor, Tyson stumbled upon a nearby AMVETS club in the 1700 block of Sherrick Road SE and asked someone to call the Sheriff.

Instead, they called the Canton police and when they arrived, there was a fight inside the club.

After being taken to the ground and handcuffed face down, Tyson told officers he couldn’t breathe.

According to his family, Tyson can be heard on police body camera telling officers at least seven times in one minute that he can’t breathe.

At that moment, a Canton police officer had his knee resting on his back.

Tyson was taken to a local hospital where he died, still handcuffed.

The Stark County Coroner’s Office ruled Tyson’s death a homicide, and that contributing causes included acute cocaine and alcohol intoxication and cardiopulmonary arrest.

In a press release, Tyson’s family attorney shared their reaction to the decision to charge Schoenegge and Burch, stating that they “breathed a brief sigh of relief.”
