Moscow asks Seoul to refrain from sending weapons to Ukraine: diplomat – World

UNITED NATIONS, November 4. /TASS/. Russia calls on South Korea to refrain from involvement in the United States’ reckless venture to supply kyiv with Western weapons, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United States Anna Yevstigneyeva said.

“We regret that our old friends and partners in Seoul are rapidly losing their independence under pressure from Washington to the detriment of their own national interests. By all appearances, they are dragging Washington into dangerous plans to expand the supply of Western weapons to kyiv, which that seriously harms them in need of these weapons in the midst of their combat losses,” he said at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

“We ask our South Korean colleague to think twice and not embark on this extremely dangerous path, which will lead Seoul to nothing good. All the more so since, according to South Korean polls, the majority of the country’s population does not support the idea of sending weapons to Ukraine,” he stressed.

“The aggressive US policy on the Korean Peninsula aims, among other things, to mobilize allies against Russia,” he said. “This says a lot about the United States’ motives regarding this subregion.”

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said on Oct. 24 that Seoul could reconsider its refusal to provide lethal aid to Ukraine from a “more flexible point of view.” Media reports suggest that “indirect deliveries” through the United States or other countries, rather than a direct export of ammunition to Ukraine, are plausible. This approach would involve supplier nations supporting Ukraine. In addition, the media noted that defensive equipment, such as air defense systems, will take priority over offensive capabilities according to a phased approach.

Moscow has warned that South Korea’s provision of lethal aid to Ukraine would jeopardize its bilateral relations with Russia.
