Manchester United-bound Ruben Amorim makes reference to Sir Alex Ferguson when asked about Manchester City clash

Manchester United fans will be watching with interest as Ruben Amorim leads Sporting into battle against Manchester City on Tuesday night.

manchester united having a new manager… well, almost.

United sacked Erik ten Hag last week and we have already chosen his replacement.

Rubén Amorim has been named United’s new manager but it won’t reach Manchester yet.

The deal allows Amorim to continue managing Sporting before the international break, meaning his first game in charge of United will be against Ipswich Town on November 24.

Amorim took on United’s cult hero Nani on Friday, beating Estrela Amadora 5-1 in his penultimate home game as Sporting coach.

Rubén Amorim shares the reference of Sir Alex Ferguson

Amorim’s final home game will be on Tuesday night when Sporting host Manchester City in the Champions League.

This weekend marks the final farewell to Braga, but all eyes will be on Amorim and how he will fare against City.

United fans will be looking for at least one positive performance; Expecting Amorim to beat City is probably going too far, but United fans want a reason to hope.

Amorim has been speaking to the media in Portugal ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash and one English journalist highlighted that a win would make Amorim an immediate hero.

As cited by RecordAmorim attempted to downplay United’s angle during the match, suggesting that he just wants to win the game for Sporting.

Amorim, however, accepted that the result will alter perceptions around him; a defeat would leave some questioning United’s move and a win, as Amorim said, would leave fans believing he is the new Sir Alex Ferguson.

Amorim does not take the situation too seriously, but is clearly aware that expectations would skyrocket if Sporting beat City.

“The focus is on winning the game for Sporting, after that, the inferences that people draw from this game are not important to me because they could be misleading,” Amorim said.

“If the result is negative, expectations will drop; If we win they will think that the new Alex Ferguson has arrived… What interests me is winning, a good farewell in Alvalade, winning in Braga and starting a new adventure in Manchester. “What I want is to make the fans and my players happy for what is coming in the new season,” he added.

How Amorim has fared in the Champions League so far this season

The league season has been remarkable for Sporting, winning 10 out of 10, conceding only three goals and scoring 35.

However, the Champions League campaign has also been impressive: Sporting beat Lille 2-0 to open the league stage.

Former United wonder Angel Gomes was sent off by Lille against Sporting but Amorim’s team still had to do the job.

Sporting then drew 1-1 at PSV Eindhoven before beating Sturm Graz 2-0 away from home.

Sporting occupies eighth position in the new format of the Champions League, having added seven points out of a possible nine.

City beat Sporting de Amorim 5-0 in the Champions League back in 2022, and Pep Guardiola’s team has the quality to repeat that result.

Even if that happens, United fans should stay calm and back Amorim to give him a bright future (and some Champions League action). Old Trafford.
