P’nut Squirrel Fans Raise More Than $158K After New York State Euthanizes Beloved Mascot: ‘Justice for Peanut!’

P’nut the Squirrel’s death has sparked an outpouring of donations, with an online fundraising page raising more than $158,000 within days of the death. The furry internet sensation was euthanized by New York state officials, sparking outrage from the community and local lawmakers.

The little creature has been in the headlines since P’nut and his friend, a raccoon named Fred, were captured by state Department of Environmental Conservation officials and euthanized last week following anonymous complaints about fears of rabies.

The squirrel’s death has sparked so much fury that it led one state lawmaker to propose legislation to improve animal rights statutes, calling the bill the “Peanut Law: Humane Protection of Animals Act.”

The protest also sparked an avalanche of donations, as well as the spread of the hashtag “#Justice4Peanut” on social media.

The cash will be donated to P’nut’s Freedom Farm, a 350-acre animal shelter the Longos run near Elmira in upstate New York, according to the page.

DEC officials removed P’nut and Fred from the property last Wednesday after obtaining a warrant to search the premises, primarily because of the raccoon.

P’nut, who was remarkably friendly and docile throughout his public life, had bitten an agent during the search and needed to be tested for rabies, authorities later said.

Then the state announced Friday that both P’nut and Fred had been euthanized.

The Longos have since it was speculated that someone anonymously alerted officials to the animals because the couple had been using the furry internet sensation, who has her own social media pages and fame, to help direct followers to her racy Onlyfans account.

“Maybe it’s someone who thinks I use this place to make a lot of money,” Mark told the Post of his rescue farm.
