America: Never better said, empowering women: letters from the PD

A Press Democrat reader says America has never been better and better.

America: never better said

EDITOR: America has never been better. Do you want to cut wood to burn, cook and stay warm, depend on animals for transportation, candles so you can see when it’s dark, live in a log cabin with a dirt floor?

Wake up, look around and see what we have now. We eat fresh food grown 1,000 miles away, electricity, electric cars that do not pollute, computers with spell check and printers that write, ovens, air conditioners, planes and trains that take us miles away in minutes, swimming pools, golf courses , television, hospitals, 40 hour work weeks, some stay home and work, public schools and Social Security, plus Obamacare, thanks to the Democrats. We live better now than kings did years ago. Help us stop polluting so we don’t lose what we have now.

When it comes to inflation, it does not matter which political party wins the elections, because inflation is here to stay, when inflation is 2%, it means it is 2% more than last year, it does not mean that prices are is going to go down

Libraries help children

EDITOR: I hope people will support continued funding for the Sonoma County Public Library system. As a retired reading specialist, I can say that research shows that children’s reading improves with access to libraries. Unfortunately, schools have had to cut back on their libraries, often hiring non-librarians to oversee their collections. But having a vital library system in the county, especially all the ways that libraries are more accessible, helps counteract this unfortunate trend in schools. Support Measurement W.

Empower women

EDITOR: There have been 46 presidents. They have all been men. Some were better than others, but overall they weren’t a brilliant record. Kamala Harris, candidate for president, being only the second woman to do so, is an alternative. And it’s historic.

In the United States we have a history of the Equal Rights Amendment and the women’s movement. Internationally, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games were the first time there were as many women’s as men’s events. Women have come a long way to demonstrate that occupying positions of power is not an exclusive domain of men.

We now find ourselves at a crucial turning point in our history because what is at stake in this election is the continuation or demise of this trend. Many members of a political party want to restrict women’s rights and are led by a man whose history with women is well known.

As Michelle Obama recently explained, voting for a woman to lead our country benefits men. Empower men so that women have the same rights. If men vote for a party and candidate that seeks to respect women, not control them, both will be empowered and Americans will make history on Election Day.

The legacy of Sonoma County

EDITOR: letter from Carol Mitchell (“Let’s stay with the cows” Wednesday) brought back many memories. When my family vacationed at Disneyland in the 1950s, the highlight of the trip for my father was visiting the dairies at 5 a.m. before Disneyland opened. Dad was a Santa Rosa dairyman and cared more about the cows than himself. His care of the cows has been passed on to my children and grandchildren, and my wish is that they can follow in his footsteps. Please vote no Measurement J – Sonoma County’s legacy depends on it.

Trump’s policies

EDITOR: It is said that you may not like Donald Trump, but you will like his policies. Please could someone tell me what those policies are? He never really tells us beyond the tax breaks for himself and his rich friends, and that he will seek revenge on those he doesn’t like.

Kamala Harris’ policies are known because she talks about them. He will reduce taxes for those earning less than $400,000 and restore Roe v. Wade. He will continue the policies that created a strong economy with a great job market, lower gas and grocery prices, huge gains in the stock market, etc. Will continue to reduce drug and drug prices. She will help first-time homebuyers with a $25,000 down payment, help small businesses get started with a $50,000 tax break, and much more.

What is Trump going to do to help someone? He appears to have no plans beyond deporting immigrants and slapping huge tariffs on imported goods, raising those costs for consumers. Please let me know when you know and put it on the front page.

Terror, not hate

EDITOR: I wish people trying to defend Donald Trump would stop saying that his critics just hate (“Newspaper endorsements” Letters, Friday). This willfully ignores countless recordings, testimonies and public statements documenting his dangerous unfitness for the highest office. He is intolerant, erratic and vindictive. He has no humility or empathy. He doesn’t take advice from anyone with more experience, but he is very open to being told what he wants to hear. He is easily carried away by flattery and flatters dictators.

I don’t feel hate. I’m terrified.
