Bay Area Power Outages Expected on Election Day

PG&E power lines in St. Helena.

Six Bay Area counties face possible power outages on Election Day and the days following. PG&E reported on Sunday.

PG&E said the power outages are likely due to high winds and dry conditions forecast in these areas. Power outages are expected for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Mall, Contra Costa, napa, sonoma, solanoand santaclara Counties.

Other possibly affected counties in Northern California include:

PG&E said about 15,000 people could be affected in 17 counties and three tribal areas.

The Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office told KTVU they have backup generators to prevent power loss, but they are also contacting PG&E for more information.

Sonoma County said they are working with their emergency management department to monitor the situation. According to officials, none of their county’s voting centers are expected to be affected by the closures.

The Santa Cruz County Registrar of Voters Office said they are coordinating with PG&E, who knows where their polling locations are and is in regular contact with them for status updates.

Officials said many polling places have emergency generators, and in places that don’t, they will have replacements available.

“Every election we develop an emergency services plan, so we already had everything ready in case of a power outage,” an office spokesperson said.

The Solano County Recorder’s Office said they are prepared and have multiple levels of contingencies.

PG&E officials said they have been “taking proactive steps to ensure service reliability at key election facilities.”

“Although there are 7,000 Election Day voting locations in the PG&E service area and 48 tabulation centers, only one voting location, the Calpine Geothermal Visitor Center in Lake County, has so far been identified as within the scope of the potential PSPS will be affected is Tuesday, November 5 at 9:30 pm, which is after in-person voting ends, out of an abundance of caution, PG&E is working to ensure backup generation is available in the Calpine Geothermal Visitor Center – currently in range of PSPS. To prepare for any non-PSPS related power outages, we have organized additional emergency equipment and materials throughout our service area now. They have their own generation of support. PG&E said in a statement to KTVU.

PG&E said these outages occur when predicted extreme weather and other on-the-ground conditions bring an increased risk of wildfires.

Those conditions include low humidity, high winds, dry material on the ground, vegetation near power lines, red flag warnings from the National Weather Service and real-time observations from weather experts and ground crews, PG&E said.

Stronger winds increase fire danger in Bay Area

Last Friday’s system had a wintry flavor with steady showers in parts of the Bay Area and a fresh blanket of snow from the Sierra. We may not be on the right path to winter yet. A pair of winds will dry out Northern California and increase fire danger.
