Robert Vargas of East Los Angeles, the artist behind Shohei Ohtani’s iconic mural at a hotel in Little Tokyohas completed its new tribute in honor of Fernando Valenzuela, late Mexican-American Dodger legend.

Vargas’ newest mural, “Fernando Mania Forever,” was unveiled on the side of a building in Boyle Heights on Sunday, Nov. 3, just days after what would have been Valenzuela’s 64th birthday and the victory parade of the World Series-winning LA Dodgers in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, November 1.

At the Friday parade, Fans young and old wore No. 34 jerseys and shared personal memories of respecting the late pitcher.whom his admirers affectionately knew as “El Toro.”

The last launcher, whose The 1981 rookie season sparked the “Fernandomania” phenomenon.He pitched 11 seasons for the Dodgers and ranks ninth on the franchise’s all-time wins list.

Vargas, who attended Friday’s parade, said he began painting the “Fernando Manía” mural on Oct. 22, the day “El Toro” died. It represents Valenzuela’s signature throwing style.looking up.

Around the mural, fans created a makeshift “ofrenda” altar after Día de Los Muertos, adorned with mementos, flowers and photographs in honor of the “No.” 34.”

The mural, located in 1781 1er. St. in Boyle Heights, is also directly across from Vargas’ Ohtani mural across the First Street Bridge.

“It’s really about bringing these two communities together; the connection that Mexicans and Japanese Americans have had, going back to before the war,” Vargas told KCAL News. “It’s about that unity: Fernando still unites us today.”
