The Outer Banks Voice – North Carolina reports record early voting totals

56% of Dare County voters have already cast their ballots.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) reports that a record number of more than 4.2 million North Carolinians cast their ballots for the 2024 General Election during the in-person early voting period that ended on Saturday, November 2.

According to the NCSBE statement, as of Sunday, November 3, including absentee voting, 4,465,548 voters have cast their ballots. That’s 57% of the state’s 7.8 million registered voters. The 4.2 million voters easily exceeded the more than 3.6 million votes cast in the same period of 2020.

In Dare County, early voting numbers closely track the state average. In total, 56.4% of eligible voters have already cast their vote; The vast majority, 18,106, did so through early voting in person and the rest by mail.

In Currituck, 41.7% of eligible voters have already cast their ballots, and 9,874 voted early in person. In Hyde County, 38.1% have cast ballots as of this writing, with 1,147 early in-person votes.

Former Buxton Naval Facility

Previously used defense site

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will host a presentation to provide an update on ongoing response actions and present information on a Restoration Advisory Board. The presentation will be followed by an open house session.

The Buxton Naval Facility Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) property was used by the US Navy as a submarine monitoring station. The property was later used by the U.S. Coast Guard until it was returned to the National Park Service. USACE is conducting a response action to remove visible oil-impacted soil and conduct confirmatory soil sampling in areas along the beach and dunes that have exhibited odors and sheen.

Subsequent actions include comprehensive soil and groundwater sampling within the project area to delineate the nature and extent of oil contamination.

USACE will hold the meeting on November 4, 2024, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Fessenden Center located at 46830 NC Highway 12, Buxton, NC 27920.
