Alexander Zverev benefits from the disappointment of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

A dramatic Paris Masters concluded Masters 1000 action on the ATP Tour for 2024, with some surprises emerging during a hectic week at the Accor Arena.

Only one of the top four finishers reached the semifinals and that player was third. Alexander Zverev – who capitalized, taking down the surprise finalist Hugo Humbert to win their second title of 2024.

Here we look at the big winners and big losers in the action in the French capital.

Big winners

Alexander Zverev: With Jannik Sinner retiring and Carlos Alcaraz out early, Zverev had a golden opportunity and he took advantage of it. The victory in the final sealed the seventh Masters 1000 title of his career and built a solid cushion on Alcaraz as world number 2.

Hugo Humbert: The French number one was not at his best in the final, but achieving his first Masters 1000 title, in front of his home crowd, is something to celebrate. His epic third round victory over Alcaraz will remain in the memory for a long time.

Karen Khachanov: The Russian’s loss in the semifinals to Humbert was not without controversy, but a good end to the season, after a difficult middle stretch in 2024, could prepare him well for 2025. He will return to the top 20 on Monday.

Carlos Alcaraz takes bold step into ATP Finals after ‘crazy’ Paris conditions

big losers

Carlos Alcaraz: Indoor tennis remains the only challenge that Alcaraz has yet to overcome. A disappointing campaign in Paris is his latest early exit from the Masters 1000; a key reason why he will drop to world number 3 on Monday.

Sinner Jannik: The world number one was unable to go to court in Paris after failing to recover from Paris. A disappointing end to what has been an extraordinary season at the Masters 1000 level.

Andrei Rublev: An early loss to Francisco Cerundolo contributed to the Russian dropping out of the top 8 of the ATP Race, and he will fight for points in Metz next week. A strange season continues for the world number 7.

Daniil Medvedev: Speaking of strange seasons, Medvedev has not won a title in 2024 and lost his first match in Paris for the third year in a row. It’s hard to see him making an impact at the ATP Finals.

Casper Ruud: Ruud probably did enough to qualify for Turin, but his monotonous second half of the season continued with his fourth loss in five games against Jordan Thompson. The Norwegian limps towards the 2024 goal.

Winner… and loser?

Holger Rune: Reaching the semi-finals was a reminder of how good the Dane can be on his day, but he rarely threatened Zverev in their semi-final and hasn’t done enough to get to Turin.

Stefanos Tsitsipas: Like Rune, the Greek showed signs of life in Paris, but fell in the round of 16 against Zverev. He will finish the year outside the top 10 and will miss the ATP Finals for the first time since 2018.

Alex de Minaur: The Australian’s run to the quarterfinals saw him place in the top eight of the race, ahead of Rublev. However, they failed to extend their lead after losing to Rune and need to secure qualification in Belgrade.
